Being an outcast, starving artist how would you go about getting a show?

I guess that would depend upon where you are.
Why the scream frank?
I guess it depends on what your looking to do. Are you trying to get into a gallery? Are you trying to promote a private show? Are you trying to get into an Art Fair?
I've done all and really hate doing any of them. I has to be done in order to show your work, but the whole process is very stressful to me.
Interesting Question.
I have representation both in a California Gallery in the Sonoma Wine country, and a artists collective gallery in Portland, OR and I have a private Art Broker promoting my work as well.
This is the culmination of six years of efforts in meeting various artists, buyers and promoters.
It is a long and slow process, and even with this, I do not sell enough work at high enough prices to make a living full time.
Many artists with good work and interesting directions of exploration only get so far because the difficulties of promoting ones work is so demanding.
The art schools (even the good ones) continue to this day to teach students the old and tired routine of sending lots and lots of Resume, Slides and Cover Letter Packets.
As someone who was once a underpaid worker at a major SF gallery, we would get hundreds of these promo-packets each month, 99% were never reviewed by the art director, most were just filed away, or returned with a letter.
This is not snobbery, so much as it was the fact that commercial galleries have a fine tuned understanding of who their buyers are, and what it is they buy, and if your work does not fit into the tastes of the buyers, then there is little incentive for that gallery to show your work.
This is a large subject and there are many ways to approach this problem.
If you wish to go into this in more detail please feel free to comment a question.
Take Care,
Joseph
I joined an Art league who was instrumental in setting up art shows and events. You can also get some good information from web sites like Wetcanvas.com . Joseph is right though you need help promoting your art if you want to make a living. Sitting in the hot sun while watching all kinds of people looking at your work is hard work and a bit unnerving good luck gene
ok, lets talk art!
How mad do you get when you take someone to a modern art show and they believe they could "do that or the kid can do that".
Again, why the Scream frank?
I think most people do not under stand technique, drawing out of your soul. the excitement that went in to the discovery and adventure they are witnessing on that canvas. Let us forgive them for they know not what they do, I am referring to the unknowing critic
