For me, it was John Singer Sargent. I just happened to be visiting the Art Institute of Chicago after High School on a day when there was an exhibit featuring his work. Never having heard of him before, I had no idea what to expect when I entered the display. It was a life changing experience for me as I was blown away with his portraiture. His dynamic use of dark backgrounds and single light sources seemed to allow his subjects to almost leap off the canvas. I know we should all be our own artists, but I can't help but admire his work and wish that I could be just a little bit like him.
So, what about you?
