hmmm...not sure what you are asking. I don't believe there is only one path. I do believe that once you've paved a path, it can be damn hard to walk off. But it is possible -- I have done it myself.

Two things about what you've said that have come to mind.

Firstly, you say you are a middle school science teacher. The most important teachers I had were science teachers and I remember them all. They taught me the love of science and the natural world which is a huge part of the foundation of my life. I clearly remember one of my biology teachers talking passionately about the mold growing in his refrigerator and how beautiful it was! So maybe you are not seeing a big part of how important you are -- if you fire up one kid out of 20, that is FRICKING AMAZING! Really.

Secondly, there are so many things you can do to help. For me, I started volunteering rescuing wildlife. I do believe the the saying "think globally, act locally" is good because it allows you to bite off small pieces. Its true that the state of the world is overwhelming and it is also true that you probably cannot tackle the whole thing. But you can tackle one thing...right? I really and truly believe that it is not just the act itself, but the energetic adding of positive attitudes and behaviors that is fighting the HUGE negativity that is out there. The state of our planet saddens me as well. I try to do all I can and keep my Son and Friends and Family informed about change. I wish I could do more than be energy efficient, recycle everything and join action groups.

What exactly are you saddened about? Does it have to do with the direction our governmental system is heading or does it have to do with the hoax of global warming or does it have to do with your career?
