What are a few of your favorite rides from 2007?
Our very favorite this year was the "grand canyon" of Pennsylvania. It is a 53-mile rail-trail in north-central PA. It is very remote and isolated, and beautiful in the fall. It is so stunning and breathtaking in its scale, that it has to be one of the great best-kept-secrets in the country.
Another was the new bike path at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Although only 5 miles long, two round-trips can give you 20 miles . Then, just park the bikes and jump in the ocean. A wonderful, smooth, black-top surface. This one is best on week days.
York, Pennsylvania has a rail-trail that runs from the historic district in center city to the Mason-Dixon line, total 43 miles round-trip. Lots of history along the way. Abraham Lincoln's train ran along this rail on the way to his Gettysburg address, and they have restored the train stations to their civil war splendor. The trail is a nice combination of wooded forest, streams and farm land. One highlight is the old railway tunnel -- yes, you bike right through it!
