Connecting to a new community can be challenging. You may have done some of these already, but you might consider:

* contacting your alumni assoc. to see who lives there.

* see if your industry has an active professional trade association chapter there

* volunteer some time for a cause of your choice

* consider joining a service group, like Rotary

* get involved with a community-related initiative

* get involved with your neighborhood assoc.

I'm not sure these activities will produce over-night success, but you should begin seeing some results in a few weeks.

I'd do everything Gordon and Robin said, and add one more....tell everyone you meet that you are new in the area and looking to build a local network/group of friends. You'll be surprised how many referrals you get from unlikely place...the plumber has a daughter in your business, the hairdresser has 3 other clients who are local business people to introduce you too....then, for every name you get, invite that person to meet for coffee (a meal is too big a commitment, but coffee can be short or long depending on whether you are hitting it off). Follow up with grateful thanks to everyone who grants you time to help you become a local...you'll have a large local community in no time!

I know this was posted a few weeks ago, but I just found this site tonight.

I actually live in Southeast Wisconsin in the Milwaukee area.

I'm not sure if this is where you are, but I do know that there are quite a few offline Meetups that take place and I highly recommend joining a loal BNI group.

I know there are chapters all over the Milwaukee area, which is a great way to start getting networked.

I remember when I moved to Spokane, knowing but one soul, and with wife and child in tow... three things worked for me (I had a background in mortgage banking, was a CFP in MN, a licensed insurance agent in three states, and a realtor in CA), to wit:

1) I invested in a hands-free telephone and headset, then

2) Smiled and dialed my way through the phone book to schedule initial interview, after developing a killer opening phrase that wouldn't guarantee a hangup first thing, (What worked for me was asking a question: "Did you know the most popular location in Spokane is the (name one of them) cemetary?" Then after the expected, "What? Why?," I'd answer, "'Cause people are just DYING to get in there." Then segue into the patter about whether or not the prospect had enough insurance, or was in need of Financial Planning for retirement...) and

3) Last but not least, and most profitable of the three, invested in 2,500 business cards and passed them out everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE. I enclosed a minimum in every bill and mailed correspondence in-or-outstate I sent (One for someone, and two for parts - the recipient might have a friend in the neighborhood, a la Six Degrees of Separation). I would stop people on the street and ask them anything, just so I could say, "Thank you for helping me. By the way, here's my card if I can ever return the favor..." I'd go to the ballpark to watch Spokane's A-League major League Farm Team (Padres), then hand out cards to every player when coming or going out of the dugout. I'd got to HS and Gonzaga College sporting events, mingling in the crowd and handing out cards. I pinned thee or four cards at a time on every bulletin board I could find, etc., etc.

Took a bit of time and a lot of effort, but it worked. The more people I met, the more opportunities there were to network.

Another thing I did, I just remembered: Volunteered to the local Library for a free seminar on computers, and how they can help with anything, especially finances. I sold more consulting than insurance, but my insurance clients were loyal... Best of luck, grit, and success!
