Job jumping for 3 years

Hello -

A brief history - retail owner of 12 location with father for five years. Then, changed to Healthcare and became Underwriter - layed off. Since 2004 - I have only been able to get temp. to hire positions, none of which have become permanent. Most recent laid-off from a mortgage business.

Putting my ownership on resume seems to be an immediate loss of interest for perspective employers. My five year Healthcare position doesn't seem to carry any weight as it was almost 4 years ago. And, since all of my resent positions have been temp. to hire postions, employers seem to be assuming I'm not a good employee.

How can I create a resume that shows my true abilities and benefits to a company as a leader?

To cut to the chase, quit thinking about a resume and start thinking about a Value Proposition. That is, be able to describe to a targeted firm exactly how you can bring value to them (and I'm not talking about your past experiences). I'm talking about the specific ideas you have for that firm on how they can be the best at what they do.

Bottom line--you take the focus off the past and start talking about the future.

Hi,

Thank you for the remarks and they are helpfull. I'm so personally confused and I don't know how to escape. One hand: I want to own my own business, but, admittedly, I don't know what? I'm very Vanilla and don't have a passion for anything but music. I'm not a good Networking person. It seems my approach is poor. Anytime I ask a person I casually meet about their career I get very guarded responses. If I say I'm exploring other career paths, they clam up and walk away.

On the other hand, I'm married for 17 years with two young children. I can't be away from home all the time, like most new businesses would require. Also, my wife isn't as willing to take the risk of borrowing the funds to start a business, even on a proven deal such as a franchise.

I just know that I'm tired of working for large companies and getting laid off. I know I could do great at whatever it is I set my mind to doing. I really just haven't been able to figure out that end-game to set my goal towards.

How do I find that "thing" I want to do right when I wake up. Not just being a business owner, but owning the "type" of business? This has plagued me for at least 3 years now.

I need a life coach!!! Does that sound so silly. I was working for the airlines now hmmmmm don't know what I want to do. I need some stability and focus. I am all over the board with my ideas none of which are remotely related to each other. I'm very talented with customer service and managing other people however I'm 48 and feel like there just isn't a market for me. I want to win a lottery and go play and not think about work. I'm am getting laid off in July from the school. (thanks Arnold).

It sounds like your a smart man and if you tweek your perspective just a tad you will come out on top. I know how much all this stuff can really play on your head, I'm going through the same type of changes myself. I think its called reinventing yourself. Sounds easey but it takes alot of brain work. Anyway when you land that fantastic job (I beleive you will) Can you hire me? (heh heh)
