Call around various psychotherapists to see who is running a newly single group near you. Look in the alternative papers. Check meetup.com from meetings of various kinds near you. Look at all the TBD groups since there are many of general discussion and support. Even neighborhood bars have groups of regulars. Finding one dear companion, of either sex, is always a treasure hunt.

being alone doesnt mean that you have to be lonely, their are plenty of things that you can do to meet other people, and believe me Ive tried these and they work, I took an creative writing class and a art course at a local college and I met some great guys, I also meet a lot of guys at coffee shops (starbucks)oh yea and they usually have great topics of conversation try thinking outside the box and you'll be supprise of what you might think of. Good luck.

Check out meetup.com. It isn't a dating site, but a place to find people who share your interests, meeting in your area. Yesterday I hosted a meetup group at my house to tune up bicycles before summer... met some people and learned how to change the tire on my bike!! There are dining groups, theater groups, all sorts of things. I think it's a fantastic resource.

There are normally many local interest groups where you can find people of similar interests and have fun in meeting new people. Also there are normally many volunteer groups listed, that if you would like to help out they would love to have you as a volunteer. To build any relationship takes meeting new people and finding those with some mutual interests and having mutual respect. I have found that people who enjoy volunteering are pretty good people all around.
