You need to find another community to substitute for your missed family. For many people churches or temples do that, but the nonaffiliated needn't go without. Anything from a support group, sewing circle, bowling team, book group would do. Look for and connect with a group of people who meet regularly so you can look forward to the regular weekly gettogether and, one hopes, make some individual friends among them.

Try www.meetup.com. You put in your zip code, and a bunch of meetings of different interests will pop up. You like to knit? Roller blade? Belly dance? Discuss books? Chances are you'll find a group that's doing something interesting. It's not a dating site... it's just a way for people with similar interests to find each other.

For instance, I'm going out with a local meetup group tonight to play Whirlyball. Think lacrosse on bumper cars. It's hysterical and I can't wait. Three nights ago I went out for Greek food with another group... flaming cheese and tentacles! Opa!!

I agree with what the others posted on here. Meeting people in groups is far less intimidating as an individual as there are many doing the same thing as you. I have found volunteer groups and community groups are very friendly and love to have new members join. The trick is finding common interests that makes it much easier to meet new people. Sometimes we make meeting new people a challenge when honestly it is very easy with so many groups available. If you are the shy type, I have found it easier when attending a first group activity to talk to one or two people asking questions about the activities and schedule. This opens the door and normally the conversation flows easily from there.

I agree with the group thing. Most of my friends I met in groups. Some were from classes I've taken at the local community center. The last one was a metal clay class. Turned out the teacher was an old schoolmate of mine. She has a huge studio at her home and offers working studio times. Just drop in and play with clay! Volunteering is another great way to meet people and feel better about yourself doing something worthwhile.
