When I was younger I would pick up a book and not put it down until I was done. It seems however that after I turned forty I acquired an Attention Deficit Disorder. Now I read 3 and 4 books at a time. As I am reading my mind begins to wander so put that book down and then I pick up whatever other book I am reading at the time and so on.
To make a long story short - I know too late - I'm reading:
A Strange and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
A Case for Faith by Lee Stroebel
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis

Maggie thats too funny. Maybe over 40 we know we have only so many hours left to read so we read all we can. I'm still the loyalist kind though. What I do now that I wouldn't dare do years ago is start reading a book and decide no thank you. I've done that with a few books lent me by good friends. I could not get into 3 Cups of Tea, nor Atonement.
I just finished Eat Pray Love.
I could never get through Screwtape Letters either.
My daughter has read all of Lee Stroebels books and loved them. I happen to love John Eldridge. His last one "Talking With God" was very good.
Never a tiresome topic amongst baby boomers JCD

I always have two-four books going and have since I was in high school. I am currently reading Retribution by Max Hastings, Hollywood Crows by Joseph Wambaugh, and rereading both Born to Kvetch by Michael Wex and Vol II of The Crucible of War by Barrie Pitt.

I tried, really tried to get into Atonement as well and gave up after the 2nd chapter. I attributed my lack of interest to the fact that I can never read while I'm traveling. ADD is a witch when I travel so I usually buy 2 or 3 magazines that don't require too much of my attention. I bought the book at an airport bookstore because I was stuck in Miami for eight hours - I fell asleep with it in my hands instead.
I tried again when I returned home and wouldn't you know it, I still couldn't read it. Loved the movie sobbed my heart out, but the book for some reason just couldn't capture my attention.
I'm almost at that point with CS Lewis, but I'm plodding on. There is something about his style of writing that isn't engaging to me.
I've never read John Eldridge, I'll have to give him a try. Thanks for the recommend.

Brittney,
Let us know of any tidbits you think we should know about. That way I won't have to read the whole thing.
My interest in him is mainly the freakish kind , like at the circus with lobster man or the werewolf boy ya now?
Ya just have to look!

Then you will love books by Ricky Jay (the magician). I can recommend Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women, which seems right up your alley. He has a number of other books that seemingly deal with your areas of interest. For what it's worth, Jay is almost as good a writer as he is a card sharp.
