It was badly reviewed by many on my book site, but I enjoyed it. In my opinion, it wasn't as good as Secret Life of Bees, but Monk Kidd does wonders with her female characters!

I think I understand why it got thumbs down. The things she says that rivet me are little pieces of sentences that would be easily overlooked if you didn't know going in that that's how she writes.
