I agree. We must admit to being a teensy bit elitist??? What is good for the masses, is too pedestrian for me? I do think what she's done for one aspect of the publishing industry has been remarkable; the fact that she's got people actually reading for a change is also wonderful. BUT, now the publishers may think every book has to be an OPRAH-sized blockbuster or they don't bother. I'm getting a little bit alarmed about what's available in new literature and what's on the best-seller lists these days. Could this be blowback from the Oprah phenomenon or is this just a cycle?

I found for the longest time that Oprah seemed to chose very depressing books. Yes, many had redeeming qualities about how individuals survived horrible situations, but I always felt like I was under a dark cloud reading them. Perhaps it is simply my taste in reading.

I did read "Pillars" years ago and found it fascinating. If you like epic stories and enjoy the time period, it is excellent. Don't let Oprah get in the way. I'm always excited when she recommends something I've wanted to read because it means Costco will have it at a discount, as well as some other stores.

thanks to oprah's stamp of approval i got mc carthy's "the road" for, maybe, 11 bucks at a target in peachtree city, georgia. didn't her club also anoint "the reader" a few years ago? not a bad choice, certainly not a mass-market kind of read... just rip off the sticker if it bothers you (yes, i did).

I find that I do not want to read books she recommends just because she (or someone else) thinks I should. I like to pick my own reading materials and often by authors that are not well known. I find if you limit yourself to someone's "list" you pass up a lot of good books. I do like the fact that Oprah has got people reading!

It's been one of those weird days. I decided I needed to sit down and have a bowl of chili, and as I did so, turned on the television for news. What I got instead was Oprah (sorry ladies!). She had Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of "Eat, Pray, Love" on her show.

Please, do not let Oprah's backing on this book talk you into not buying it. I read it a year ago and have read it again twice. It is wonderful. Oprah is just late to get with the "program". This book has been the top "non-fiction" paperback out there and I cannot recommend it enough. It was funny, introspective, and thought provoking.

I don't share you people's problem with Oprah at all. To the contrary, I am grateful for her recommendations. I have liked most of her recommended books and it has saved me a lot of time wasted on duds. Guess I don't have the time to do the sorting out myself. I'm just grateful for the time to read 10-12 books a year.

I just read Eat Pray Love and I agree with you, it's just wonderful. It's one you want to buy. I am sure I will revisit it over and over. I turned the pages over on many of my favorite passages.

I always liked Oprah's choices since she spotlighted Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. I had loved that book for years and no one knew about it. Then Oprah discovered it and she made Wally a star. It's a great book and deserved the attention she gave it. I love that Oprah has gotten everyone reading again. I think it's great.
