My book group has decided to have each one of us choose a genre of our choice to read this year. Mine is the mystery. Not the police procedural, but a real mystery. I am a fan of the British and European settings, even though I love a Stephanie Plum or Kinsey Millhone fix every time a new one comes out!
Also, none of the others in the group have "knowingly" read mysteries.
My dilemna and therefore my question to the group is which one to choose? And should I choose the first one in the series, so that in the event that someone should want to continue reading them. (I'm so anal, that I insist on reading all series in order--as I don't want to come in on a death or divorce of the main character--and then go back in time!!!--weird, I know).
I also maintain that mysteries can be literary so that leaves out:
Mary Higgins Clark
Patterson
Stuart Woods
and other "popular" writers.....sorry, they may be good thrillers, but literature they ain't.
So gentle reader....who and which work would you suggest?
Many thanks!
