Here is a thought experiment I've been thinking about since I was 13.
You have a box made of some extremely strong solid material. Seal it in such a way that nothing can leak into or out of it. Then, in some manner, remove all of the matter and energy from within the box, so that all that is left is empty space. Then, if it were possible, remove the space itself.
It seems to me that the box would either collapse, or the interior of the box would have to expand to replace the "space" which you removed.
This tells me that it is not possible for there to be literally nothing, for space is in and of itself something. Further, I believe this also calls into question the "fact" of the big bang, and gives credence to the idea that the physical universe is in fact infinite and eternal. Or did I simply go around a logical bend 33 years ago?
There is a very good book about Plasma physics which does support my thinking. "The Big Bang Never Happened" by Eric J. Lerner
