Forgive me if this is the wrong group to post this in, but I thought it would be, as it relates not only to ethics, but to artificial and natural selection.
I remember the Cosmos episode where Carl Sagan, in discussing natural and artificial selection, used as an example the crabs captured by Japanese fisherman; the ones that had markings on their shells similar to the mask of the samurai were released, and after hundreds of years of this practice, the vast majority of those remaining bear the markings of the samurai. They were selected for survival, unwittingly, by the fisherman.
My thoughts went to humans. Are we, by virtue of medical technology, weakening the human species by intervening, let's say even just with newborns, to ensure the survival of individuals that wouldn't have survived otherwise? Aside from the external factors that could increase the mortality risk of newborns, such as the health of the mother, etc., I'm not really sure if the medical field understands all the reasons for infant mortality, or even prematurity, they react to the circumstance and have found ways to overcome problems that would have otherwise taken the life of the infant. But in the human zeal for pro-life, it seems nearly every circumstance is considered for medical intervention, including those with chromosomal defects. Are we artificially selecting for survival of individuals that natural selection would have selected against?
(Thinking about all this sometimes gives me the willies, as I have thoughts about the nazis, the master race, etc. I want to distance myself from sounding like I'm suggesting some type of cleansing. I'm not. The thought of that is horrifying. But in my mind, the question cannot be ignored because it's uncomfortable. )
What effect could this have in several generations? Are we, unwittingly, interfering with the natural mechanism the keeps a species strong and viable? In the face of overpopulation of the planet by humans, are we going to be presented with eventually having to make judgement calls as to who we allow to live and who we allow to die? Where we intervene and where we don't? Are we slowly weakening the gene pool if we don't make these calls? What are your thoughts?
