Jellyfish are neat. But the first time I flipped over a live horseshoe crab, now that freaked me out.
They eat and poop out of the same orifice, have no brains, spend their lives floating aimlessly with mating as their single purpose, and they sting on contact. Who do they remind you of?
On the flip side, they taste great (Shanghai specialty).
Many humans poop and think with the same orifice :-)
Besides, some of the jellies look so neat -pictures here - and there's a kind on the coast here that washes up on the exposed sand bars at night. When you walk on the bars, the changing fluid in the sand under them cause them to electroluminesce like little containers of lightening.

I love looking at jelly fish, and their different colors. As a SCUBA diver, I always wear a protective suit because I never want to come in contact with jelly fish. Alive or DEAD, they will sting.

According to National Geographic - they don't float aimlessly that is a myth - they know what they are doing and that's the freaking thing because they don't have a brain but they do have a nervous system - prehistoric like - they are freaky - they are able to be asexual and when the condions are right multiply like crazy - they are taking over the waters in Japan - they are sooooooooooooo freaky - my two biggest fears now - tornadoes and jelly fish.

I was just making a joke, as it reminded me of people from a certain profession :-)
They do have photosensitive cells that they use to determine direction, or how they decide it's time to mate. The thing that worries me about their increasing numbers, is not their looks, it's why this is happening.
They compete for food sources with bigger fish, and it seems as overfishing gets rid of their main competition, so there is more of them around. This is not to mention that jelly fish is one of the sea turtles favorite meals, and sea turtles are sensitive to pollution, so with dwindling sea turtles populations as a control group, jelly fish increase in numbers.
Have you been to an aquarium with a good jelly fish exhibit? it may change your mind about them.
I'm not sure - the national geographic special said they have advanced eyes - pupils and retinas i think - i will have to do some research - i think they are neat looking but the increasing in numbers part are that fact that some stings are fatal and that their tentacles are so long. I am from Gulf Shores Alabama and when i was last there was 7 years ago - i took a fairy to an aquarium and on the way out there - you see the huge jelly fish floating in the water. I love the beach so i hate that they are out there - of course, even seaweed freaks me out - i hate when you are swimming and it gets caught around your leg or brushes against you
