Whitemanitou asked about using human waste - poop - as fuel.
I did a little looking around to find the current state of things.
Before the big answer, it might help explain the results is we all start with the same understanding of how we get the poop.
Humans eat. Food, drugs, vitamins. We have various bugs, germs and fungus in our systems and on our bodies.
Out all that comes as poop.
Poop goes into the sewer system. So do our chemicals - bleach, discarded untaken drugs, anything we flush or toss down the sink. Add to that all the other stuff that goes in. Industrial sewage, junk rainwater washes into the system, you name it.
All these lovely things mix together until they get to the treatment plant. There, the solid waste, again, poop, which has been mixing with and absorbing all this crap is pulled out of the mix.
With that start, this is what I found:
The West been using human poop as fuel for years, plant fuel, aka fertilizer. In the orient and possibly other places, it is an ancient practice. A few years ago we found out people living downwind of poop powered plants are susceptible to illness blown out of the fields. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/07/020730075144.htm
Poop chips, think cowpies, have also been used as fuel for energy generation. Burning poop releases all sorts of nasties. Mercury, dioxin, whatever is in the mixture that can escape into the atmosphere, does escape. Science will eventually be able to capture them before they get away. Will it be a cost-effective method, that will be seen.
In Israel, a company is working on converting poop directly into gasoline. If they or others find a way to do it, commercialization is probably years down the road.
Kobi, Japan, is one of the leaders in converting poop to methane. This year they hope to bring a conversion plant on line that will provide enough methane to run 40 city buses as much as 50 km a day. If my math is correct, that's a grand total of 1200 miles a day worth of methane. You can read more about it here: http://www.ikjeld.com/japannews/00000319.php
