I am not a scientist or psychologist, but I can provide some basic info on how EQ works.
Looking at the human brain, the pathway for emotional intelligence starts at the spinal cord. Senses enter the brain there. They need to travel to the front of the brain before one can think, act, and speak rationally about those senses.
This is where it gets tricky and sticky: senses first travel through the limbic system, the area of your brain where you feel things, before getting to the rational area. Ah ha.
So, thinking to a time when you feel you lost it, overreacted, displayed emotions inappropriately, spoke too quickly, etc., you can consider it like an emotional hijacking: you sensed something and before the data could reach the rational part of your brain (the part that says, Cool it/Calm down/Ignore/Don't say anything, as you will regret it!), the limbic region hijacked it and emotions flew out of your mouth, through your arms down your fingertips, out through your eyes--however your body manifested the emotion.
