When I first met my wife some 7 years ago she had a copy of Emotional Intelligence on her bookshelf (it was one of the things that attracted me to her). While I found the book interesting it was a bit of a disappointment to me. It felt more like a sales pitch than an instruction manual. I distinctly remember finishing it and feeling that I got so much less out of reading it than I had hoped.
Becoming more emotionally aware and adept is very important to me, but so far I have not found any reference materials that seem to help much.
Probably the best comment that I have read on the subject was constructive criticism of the Golden Rule. The author suggested that it was of little value to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", because they are not you and may not like what you like.
They suggested "Do unto others as they would like to be done unto."
For me this is much easier said than done, but seems to be worth the effort. 8^)

Daniel Goleman is the "big" name in EQ.
Of all his books, I feel Primal Leadership is the best. Not a beach read, though. I like it because it focuses on leadership and EQ and has lots of stats.
Instead of Emotional Intelligence as a start to learning about EQ, I recommend The Emotional Intelligence Quickbook.

The criticism does sound, on the first reading, very constructive, logical and relevant. Yet, on the second thinking, I'd call it casuistical because what the rule must imply by saying "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is that you should treat others with love, unconditionally, which is how you would like others to treat you.
I don't think the rule means any certain deeds or actions.
So, actually, the paraphrase ("Do unto others as they would like to be done unto") means exactly the same, "Treat others with love as this is how you would like to be treated".
Just how I see it...
I have not read this author, or anything on this subject, but I think I agree with Sparrow on this thought. Who wouldn't like to be treated with love? It is a basic part of life and our needs.
Wouldn't that be nicer than saying, "sure, go ahead and treat me like shit...that's what I've always dreamed of".
