I was chatting with an acquaintance the other day and she made a comment to the effect of "you're too nice to be butch."
That stunned me a bit "Butches aren't nice?" so I asked her to elaborate. I don't want to go into her explanation, but it did start me thinking about stereotypes and labels.
Do I use the label 'butch?' No, not really. But I suppose outwardly I don't appear 'femme'. If that's the case am I butch? Soft butch? Baby butch?
The stereotype. Well, I dress in jeans&buttondown shirts and my hair is short. I work out on a regular basis but don't play sports. I know how to change my car's oil & tires, but that's what garages are for. I also sing show tunes, cook well and know how to apply makeup.
Does the label create the stereotype or the other way around?
What's your experience?
