I read something that I found interesting in a book published by the American Psychiatric Association. It said that people who spread rumors that somebody is a homosexual is motivated by jealousy and envy. And that engaging in such conduct is to be considered a factor in the diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder.
In the last place I worked somebody spread a rumor that I was a homosexual. I never disclosed anything about my sexuality to anybody in the workplace, and I don't fit the stereotypes.
I suffered a lot of job harassment about being gay. I think the ringleader of the harassment -- the one who spread the rumor about me -- was not so much a homophobe as a narcissist who was jealous and envious of me.
