I have never taken a cruise and have traveled to Europe, the Far East and South Asia. My brother, on the other hand, has traveled extensively in China, Russia, Mexico and taken a round the world cruise, all with tour companies. We each sing the virtues of our way of doing it. I like the autonomy and the insights of traveling without being surrounded by my cultural bubble of Americana ... he likes being able to return to the ship for a shower and familiar food each evening. I enjoy staying in the homes of people who live in various countries and the spontaneity of seeing places "off the tourist map," while he enjoys the familiarity and security of the ship and night life as they go from place to place. I don't suppose one way is "better" than another with pros and cons for each. What thoughts do group members have for unique or traditional ways of seeing new places?
