I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to test a new remote control for those of us with complex, or even semi-complex HDTV and/or stereo, DVD systems. I've tried lots of them and even have a $1000 version in my Home Theater (MX-3000) to control everything on a touch screen. Due to my association with bzzagent (no connection with orcompensation from them or Harmony, who makes the remote - they just asked me to demo it) - I have had this handy device for about 3 weeks now and wanted to let you all know about it.
If you have ever struggled with multi-remotes (especially some spouses I know, who can never figure out how to turn things on or off) in a complicated setup - this may be for you. It is a beautiful remote with a touchscreen that almost literally "does it all". It even does away with the booklets of endless codes to enter - how many of us have been frustrated that the book didn't have our newest model? Well, this is done online with the Harmony One, so their database is up to date with the latest equipment.
You can even tell it what order things are connected in and whether some devices should be left on continuously (cable tv box, for example) and what input each device is connected to. In other words, once you take the 30 minutes or so to set it up via a wizard interface, it becomes "set and forget". You touch the screen for "watch cable tv" and your tv turns on, the correct input is selected and you have immediate control, right down to color graphics for your fav. channels. If you decide to switch to a DVD, you just touch "watch DVD" and it turns on the DVD and switches the TV input. It will even adjust the aspect ratio of the screen if you want.
Bottom line, if your family has struggled with multiple remotes and want a truly universal single remote, you should consider the Harmony One. I don't mean for this to sound like a commercial - as I said, I get no compensation and have no interest beyond clearing up my wife's usual complaints! This unit sells for 1/4 what I paid for my Home Theater remote and does the same things except for RF control - it does need line of sight to the devices.
I'd be glad to answer questions about it if anyone is interested and even have a few %15 off coupons they sent me for friends who want one (I've given 3 away, but have a couple left). My friends who stop by and have used the thing are really impressed. If the multi-remote problem exists in your house, have a look at it.
Checking out now....
