So I don't get in trouble here... in the book "He's Just Not That In To You", the author says most guys are basically cowardly... they would rather say what you'd like to hear, than actually tell you what they think face to face... Thus, you can't judge by words (and I realize this is a generalization and there are exceptions), but you must judge their actions.

...either that or you bought a book by an author who will say anything to sell a book
