Many of us here are baby Boomers and can remember this day 40 years ago when Martin Luther King was shot. I have been thinking back to that day - my parents trying to explain to me how such a thing could happen and the Summer of 1968 when we joined Jesse Jackson's Poor People's March in Washington D.C. i was raised/reared Quaker and a group of us from our Florida meeting went to picket the Department of Agriculture building. We did not stay in resurrection city, but the images of those days are seared into my brain. I have never seen such a scary sight as hundreds of police in riot gear looking like dark dome-headed insects - little tear gas cannisters hung upon their belts. We were very close by as Jesse Jackson gave a news interview. It was an amazing experience.
My discussion topic is - do you have memories of the civil rights struggle you would like to share? Was anyone else at the Poor Peole's march? Other demonstrations? Anyone want to share?
