I'm a native South Carolinian and would be glad to direct you. The crown jewel of the state is Charleston. It was/is a significant port since colonial times, truly a history lovers paradise! The historic area is an international tourist destination. The residential area is gorgeous just to stroll around for hours. Restaurants and shops range from the most expensive to very reasonable especially in the market area. Myrtle Beach which is the northern coastal area is a beach lovers playground. Lots of activities and attractions of every kind. It's the second most requested vacation area behind Orlando. Hilton Head Island/Beaufort is the on southern coast. It's more about tennis/golf and dignified beach goers. Many islands in between have their own personalities. If you could describe to me your preferences, I'll direct you to the best one. The up-state also is beautiful. It's at the foothills of the Smokey Mountains. Many waterfalls, hiking trails, whitewater rivers for rafting and kyaking and camping. It's more for the nature traveler. Columbia is the center of the state and the capital where the University of SC is located, very eclectic, with a little bit of everything.

thank you so very much. Your post is full of pertinent info. I think we are interested in all of the above - we love tennis and history, as well as the beach and window shopping. You have made me quite excited. The hiking also sounds like something we'd be interested in, but short hikes, not long. If you have any other advise or info, please write more. rr

I don't know how long you'll be staying or in what part of the state your son lives, but if you're here a few weeks, you could hit the highlights of the special places fairly well. Hope you have a wonderful visit!
