I have had long hair most of my life and a few depressive episodes, but never the urge to shave my head. I feel like the long hair is more of a protection. Imagine not having anything to hide behind.

If you must entertain the idea maybe go with lopping 6 inches at a time. See if that doesn't give you some "lightness of being"

Disenchanted 1 if you do would you consider donating to Locks of Love? I bet they rarely get any hair your beautiful copper color.

I agree with Seeker08 that the desire to cut your hair is often a self-destructive desire.

But I also think it is a response to extreme frustration. When I used to get super-depressed, I would think of doing just about anything to try to get the constant pain to go away. I would think about walking into my boss's office and quitting without any kind of notice. I would think about getting into my car and driving until I reached an ocean. I would think about telling my wife that I wanted a divorce. And, of course, I would think about suicide. Fortunately, I never did any of these things.

However, each of those thoughts was a desire to get out of my situation as it was at the time. I knew intellectually (as you do) that these changes would not solve any of my problems, but psychologically I wanted and hoped so much to make a change that I would consider anything.

Anyway, don't do it.

It falls under the same category as cutting oneself - except it doesn't hurt as much unless you catch your ear in the scissors. It is punishing yourself because you can't stand the real pain of living. It is a distraction and an attention getter. You must admit, it does beat the heck out of suicide. If you kill yourself, you can't grow back and maybe get a nicer style than the last time!

Seriously, if you are at the end of your rope, seek help. If you are clinically depressed, you need to be evaluated. If it is just a lousy life, you have to make some moves to improve it. I am writing this last part for the many people who are at the end of their rope and looking at drastic remedies as something reasonable because nothing else seems to work.

Look at your picture. Why destroy your beauty to accomplish nothing. It won't change the real problems one iota. Instead, get your hair done and buy yourself a little bling to compliment your hair and smile! Even if there is no audience, take a bow. Your TBD friends are applauding all your efforts to get your life together.

There are always healthy ways out of any situation except after you jump off a tall building. Then the only way out is ... OUT!
