Testosterone Patch: Women's Answer to Viagra...

I don't know about a patch (I seem to be allergic to the adhesive in patches) and I would not call it a woman's answer to Viagra, but certainly many of us on hrt are taking some testosterone. Most hrt (hormone replacement therapy)includes a combination of estrogen, progesterone,a nd testosterone. There are many possible side effects and negative press about hrt. There are some posts on tbd where women have described some herbal remedies to deal with their symptoms. Given my medical history and after careful consultation with both my doctor and my husband, I've gone the hrt route. It works for me, but should not be taken lightly.

Talia, I tried Premarin and then (way back when) I thought another pill for part of the cycle, progesterone maybe? The process made me weepy. I may have that 2nd pill wrong, was at 40 when I did this.

Hey Zumba,
The least controversial route for testosterone supplementation is intravaginal cream. The concern for testosterone in women is irritability, course hair growth in unwanted places, lowering of voice.
I've seen testosterone supplementation by doc's for women, and they do work, but at a level that causes the unwanted side effects.
The best treatment for low libido in woman is addressing the cause, 9/10 are not hormonal, they are physical or emothional. That goes for guys too.
And men with Andropause and testosterone supplementation RARELY report better libido. It tis more for a feeling of wellness, and strength.

I am NOT a physician, but my doctor (who I LOVE) is not a fan of premarin. I get a combo that is made at the Women's International Pharmacy and theoretically is better and made from less harmful ingredients. My insurance, of course, wishes I would take something more common and periodically I have to fight with them to cover this. Sometimes I win and sometimes I don't. I'm willing to pay the extra $$ in order to follow my doctor's wishes.

I'm taking it in pill form and do NOT have a problem with extra hair growth, lowering of my voice, or irritability. I'm only a sample of 1, but I don't have these problems. There are very low doses available in pill form. You need to ask your doctor lots and lots of questions. Many of the docs in the HMO's are told what they can and cannot perscribe. This is a problem if you're in an HMO, but keep trying. There are MANY choices for all of these hormones.

My partner uses testosterone cream. She's not had the hair growth or additional irritability, but her voice did lower, which is *not* a problem. Low, kind-of Lauren Bacall-ish. Pretty darned yum if you ask me.
It hasn't really done much for her libido, but seems to help overall.
