Several years ago, a friend from church decided to go have her first mammogram. She was 45 at the time, had never had any problems, felt any lumps, etc. The results were not good as she had cancer in both breasts. Radical mastectomies followed by chemo and radiation. The story had a happy ending--she has been cancer free for 7 years and was able to see her youngest child married and is enjoying several grandchildren who have come into her life since her cancer diagnosis.
There was group of us who scheduled a "mammogram party" when this happened. We went to lunch then went and had our first mammograms. Since then, we go to lunch together once a month. We were all lucky--no problems for any of us.
If you have never had a mammogram, don't be afraid of it. It is a simple procedure, basically painless while somewhat embarassing if you are a stickler for modesty. Most insurance will pay for it and the peace of mind is well worth the cost.
Do this for yourself--don't put it off.
