According to Abrahan Zalenik's essay in the "Harvard Business Review on Leadership" writes...Manager's goals arise out of necessities rather than desires; they excel at diffusing conflicts between individuals or departments, placating all sides while ensuring that an organization's day to day business gets done.

Leaders, on the other hand, adopt personal, active attitudes toward goals. They look for the potential opportunities and rewards that lie around the corner, inspiring subordinates and firing up the creative process with their own energy.

He goes on to describe how the notion of manager has gathered a "mystique" because of the need to "rely on, and strive to maintain, orderly, stable, work patterns."

Whereas, leader's arise out of "Mentoring relationships ... crucial to the development of leadership personalities, but in ... bureaucratic organizations, such relationships are not encouraged".

My last two managers/directors do the same thing every morning: come in to work head down, walk right past their staff, turn on their computer & start sending e-mails to the same staff sitting 10 feet away.

I was assigned to another work group last month. The manager came in, walked down two different aisles saying "Good morning" to each person by name before going to his desk. He never sent anyone an e-mail without first discussing the issue w/ that person.

Guess which group willingly stays late to get the job done & which group is always delaying projects?

Sometimes it's the little things....

A manager, like Covey says, keeps the troops slashing through the jungle. Leaders will climb a tree and survey and can report to the manager to say: "Wrong Jungle".

Many managers like to get in and supervise every little detail. Leaders don't do this and don't want to.

Leaders know the meaning of "If you want a place over men, you must be beneath them and if you want a place in front of other men, you must be behind them".

Leaders don't seek attention. They don't have a need for it. One of the few reasons there are so few leaders is that not many know how to turn the knowledge of what leadership is into the action it takes to lead. Those who serve, lead. The more you serve, the more you lead. If you wish to be served constantly and demand this out of rank, that is management. You cannot manage people, they can only be lead. You can only manage things. That's more Covey. Margaret Thatcher said "Being a leader is like being a Lady. If you have to say you are, you're not".

I am reminded of a man, who at his final night being alive in his life on earth held a dinner which he was hosting. When everyone invited came in, the host washed the feet of the guests. This host was the leader. That is leadership.

John Maxwell can teach us about leadership. He is perhaps the greatest living leadership teacher on this planet now. Leaders need no supervision. Leaders know that private victories preceed public victories. Leaders are tougher on themselves than any manager even could be. You know when you are in the presence of a leader. They have a presence about themselves that is undenialbe. Leaders are unstoppable. Leaders lead leaders and do not follow followers. Dr. King was a Leader. Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln. These people had that thing about them. John Maxwell said "Management is position. Leadership is disposition".

A manager is a leader and must not forget that a great portion of their job has to do with those whom they interact with. It is key that they are heard and treated with respect. The behavior of employees is representative of whether a leader is doing their job or not. The role of a manager is assigned by the Powers That Be with the expectation that the manager will leverage people and other resources to get work done.

The role of a leader is granted by those that choose to follow. On other words, the only requirement for leadership is that there are followers.

The really smart managers realize that leadership can provide the direction toward the goal and management can remove the barriers to achieving the goal. Really smart managers also recognize that they will frequently not be the leader that others choose to follow, so they encourage and influence the leaders the team is following so that everyone is working towards the common goal.

You manage objects...You lead people. We have to remember that we have responsibilities to both. This is, taking care of the logistics but motivating people to do their best. Leadership has been defined as the ability to get others to do your will. Great leadership achieves the same results but has people believing it's their idea. Douglas McGregor keeps reminding us that people inherently want to do a good job. It's up to the manager to provide his or her people with the resources to do a good job; it's up to the leader to motivate the people to do that good job. :-)
