I always liked Caleb Carr's books....NY crime stories, turn of the century, great narratives!

Does Raymond Chandler qualify? Love his depictions of the seamy side of LA in the '30's and '40's. Best detective novels ever for my money.

Anyone read Max Byrd? His books are fictional accounts (historically based for the most part) about Jefferson, Jackson, and Grant. Fun stuff.

I think LA in the 30's and 40's qualifies as history. I don't know Max Byrd - will look at him on amazon before my next airplane trip

Michael and Jeff Shaara are a father & son who have covered the Civil War and other historical topics. Michael's "The Killer Angels" is the book the mini series "Gettysburg" is based on. Start with "Gone for Soldiers" about the Mexican-American War with Lee, Grant and other Civil War Generals as Lieutenants. "Gods and Generals" starts the Civil War. "The Killer Angels" is next and "Last Full Measure" is about the conclusion of the War. If you like historical fiction you'll love these books.

Jeff's books on the American Revolution are wonderful. I'll have to check out the Civil War era books. Thanks for the recommendation.
