Yesterday my mother's live-in caregiver informed us that it's time to bring in Hospice. My mother, 81, has stage 6 Alzheimer's and emphysema, can no longer walk, has trouble eating, is incontinent and all those other things Alzheimers.
My Mom and Dad still live together in the house they built in 1963. The caregiver lives downstairs and a sub comes in on the weekends. My Dad, 84, is obviously completely devastated. He's also driving everybody crazy: the doctors, the caregivers, my sister, my wife - most of the time he is obstreperous and contrary, and is slowly ceding control, begrudgingly.
So - two things on the table:
1) what's been your "death watch/Hospice" experience? What advice would you give to a "first timer"?
2) Have any of you had to deal with a situation like I've described above - the spouse in denial, heartbroken, lost? I'm wondering how I can help my old man without telling him to "butt out" and leave the caregiving to the professionals.
Thanks in advance for your input.
