I thought it might be interesting to start a special interest group for people who do lace knitting. (I'm thinking there might be some people like that out there on this site). I have always wanted to figure out how to actually design lace patterns, so I'm hoping there are others out there who also like to knit lace who might like to share what they are doing and give advice. Here is an old project I did a while back for a friend's wedding.

I love lace knitting! I have a couple of lace shawls going... I can't seem to do one project at a time. My experience with designing patterns is limited. I find charting a pattern is very helpful. Are there others who enjoy knitting from charts? I think it is especially helpful in lace and "celtic" or cabled work.

Hi, Bryn Mawr and welcome! We seem to be a very select "crowd" here on TBD. I knit form words or charts and sometimes from ideas in my head. I find charts the easiest especially when trying to correct mistakes. Those pesky Yarn Overs get lost sometimes and it helps to know when the stitch above it is going the wrong place! What are you working on right now? At the moment I am not doing any lace, I am working on an afghan to use up some of my yucky old acrylic yarn from 30 years ago!
I collect alot of crocheted lace because it seems undervalued. I have some of my grandmother's tatted lace. I have a book on shetland lace but I am much too impatient to try that. I absolutely love what you have done and I have no idea how to do this myself but what would happen if you broke it down into design element units.And then played with the composition.

Yes, you are right about a lot of that handwork being undervalued. If you payed those women a fair hourly wage those things would be in the hundreds of dollars.
Breaking patterns down is what I have been doing, but I have aspirations of actually designing pictures into lace. (One still has to break it down, discover patterns of different densities and figure out how to do lines, etc.) There was a German designer named Niebling that did amazing organic looking lace patterns. I'll try and upload a picture below. (That is what I want to be able to invent.)
