Not only is the article provocative, but the comments to the article on the site are worth reading as well.
Having been on both sides, as employer and employee, I found the bullying, the suers, the folks who extort by threatening to sue, the problem with not being able to fire the really destructive workers all to be true.
I find leadership does set the tone, but it isn't a total cure for the miserable employee unless there his hire and fire power.
One of my bosses wouldn't let anyone complain, unless in the next breath they had a creative solution. That improved the tone in the office and in staff meetings.
Another boss was so bright, warm, human, and creative, that it simply brought out the best in everyone. We worked hard, laughed, and cried together.
Having bosses who abuse their power can be damaging as well. I have had bosses who were told by "higher ups" to encourage me to leave by some nasty methods. I did leave when I finally dreamed I was about to be executed with no stay of execution.
I have found in the past seven years that the tone set by the President of the US, has given a tacit permission for bad behavior all the way down the line.
I opted out of those situations and set up my own businesses, and am happily self employed, rarely having to deal with others with those destructive traits. I am not totally insulated, but definitely side stepping most of those difficulties. Every now and then I do have to come out about an issue of social justice; I still get to engage the establishments, but overall, life is good!
