I work for a small reinsurance organization as an accounting manager. My boss is the CFO and my position was created from his duties. In essence, I am doing half of his job for half of the pay.
I had a bit of a hard time personally about a year ago and it did affect my performance, but rather than try to find out what was wrong and offer some help (did I mention he's also the human resources manager), I was simply taken to task and put on "probation." In fact, they as much as offered me the door. I have since gotten back on track after being diagnosed with ADHD, but nothing seems to have changed.
Furthermore, this man has never, ever admitted to being wrong about anything! If something is pointed out to him, he either pretends he has no idea what it's about or says it is "not important." Yet, at the same time, I am watched like a hawk and every single minor mistake is presented to me as if it is the most egregious error ever perpetrated on the face of the earth.
The warning bells should have been going off when he initially started off by cluing me in on all the people whom he dislikes in the office and how they are out to "screw the company." Stories were told in great detail about how awful these people were. It is now obvious to me that this man has no self esteem and must deride everyone in order to bolster his own opinion of himself.
Needless to say, that although this company has a very nice benefit package, micro management and nitpicking are never going to make for a happy workplace.
I am interviewing on Friday for a new position and I hope to God that I can land it, because this is unbearable (not to mention it wreaks havoc on MY already low self esteem).
