Yesterday I attended my son’s my college football game where we enjoyed a win for the home team and some interesting fashion. Fashion at a football game you ask? You wouldn’t believe it! I was surprised and enthralled.
Of course there was the typical sea of jeans and sweatshirts, but high heels (and I’m talking 4 inch stilettos) at a football game? Even the girl’s friends were giving her some grief about her shoe selection, but it appeared she didn’t care and even told them she wears her high heels everywhere….even at the beach. At the beach? I can’t imagine how difficult it must be walking in those shoes at the beach! But the real question is why? She wasn’t too steady climbing the bleachers, which is what caught my, and many others, attention. Someone even yelled out, “Take ‘em off before you fall!” And those babies have seen some mileage; it’s obvious she wears this particular pair a great deal. Time to get a new pair was some time ago.
But she wasn’t the only one; I saw several women in high heels and boots. It’s funny- when I’m at the local mall it’s all jeans, sweatshirts, and tennis shoes, but at a football game women are wearing high heels. Grass, the running track, and bleachers aren’t the place for high heels shoes and boots; I mean when men are commenting on a woman’s choice in shoes you know she made the wrong decision. (It’s my theory that most men don’t notice good fashion, but they seem to intrinsically notice the fashion faux pas women make.)
And all the purses…at a football game? I never carry a handbag to a sporting event; a seat cushion, the occasional blanket, and even the ‘ol umbrella sometimes…but never a purse. [Don’t get me wrong- love me some handbags, I do!] But what could they possible have/need in those huge handbags that they’ll need for the couple hours they’re at the game? Maybe there’s a seat cushion, or a blanket (it was cold and windy) or one of those big foam fingers and pompoms in there? Accessories such as shoes, handbags, and jewelry have their rightly place in the fashion world, but when they’re used inappropriately they make you appear silly and not fashion savvy.
And here’s another tip- check the weather before you attend an outdoor sporting event. Even the most fashion-challenged women and men know how to dress for an outdoor game with temperatures only in the high fifties and windy. When you hear someone yell out, “Go home and get a coat”, again, you know she made a fashion blunder. No wonder so many men and women think fashion is ridiculous…when they see women inappropriately dressed they blame the fashion industry and consider it all superfluous.
Fashion can be fun, can make you look fantastic, and sometime can intentionally be outrageous, but it should never be blamed for the gratuitous decisions women make when they’re not dressing for the weather or event.
