Not necessary, but it's nice to have past intimacy with the person. Sometimes I just want sex, no kissing, hugging, ect... and sometimes I want it to be very intimate. All depends on my mood ...and how much I have had to drink lol J/K

Depends on who you ask. You came to the right place to ask that question and I am sure you will get a myriad of answers. For me, I would say yes. Although I am married now, I wasn't always so. Quenching a purely sexual urge can be satisfying. However it depends on what you are looking for personally. If you are looking for a connection on more than just a purely physical level, then it won't be.

It is for some people some of the time;for others it's necessary all the time.

Is not Sex itself an act of intimacy ?

For me even if it is no strings attached sex, it is still an intimate act. Even if you kiss, say goodbye and go your separate ways, there is always a piece of my heart that goes with that partner.
