Do any of you plant specifically to encourage birds and butterflies to come to your space? When I bought my house 8 years ago, I was sad to see so few birds in the village. So I have begun to strategically plant shrubs, perennials, and fruit trees to attract birds and butterflies.
Birds do not even need anything so specific as foods they like--they appreciate the simple cover shrubs and trees afford them and will start hanging out around your place more. But, I have planted lilacs, and set up a bird bath within their leafy shelter, and I have also put in mulberry trees, elderberry bushes, and I let wild plants like chicory grow so that the little gold finches can eat their seeds. I also let the wild woody nightshade vine grow (the birds eat the berries in winter) and I have bright orange trumpet vine to attract hummingbirds.
Anyone else doing something like this? Let's share ideas?
