Then the gov't should also intervene in all the new jobs that globalization creates. If out-sourcing is crippling our economy then why is the national unemployment rate at 5%? Lower than every country in the world. The fact is the elimination of old jobs and the creation of new different jobs has been going on for centuries. For many reasons, more often than not due to technology changes, and globalization is just today's catalyst. Think blacksmiths, typesetters, the milk man, etc... since out-sourcing is only possible due to technological advancements. The creation of new jobs as a direct result of globalization is never reported. Only the bad news is. And sometimes it works differently than you might imagine. While there is plenty of talk about the plight of the American autoworker. The truth is more complex than the perception. For instance, due to the strong Euro and weak dollar, Volkswagen has recently committed to opening an engine and transmission plant in the US. Today exchange rates plays a huge part in where investments and jobs are made as well, not just cheap labor. Today manufacturers have plants in every continent and build products where they make the most sense. And certain locales are chosen for reasons beyond cheap labor. Shanghai has become the electronics capital of the world. Not due to cost, but due to brainpower. As a result General Motors recently moved its entire electronics purchasing department there to ensure that they are at the cutting-edge of technology. So white collar workers are no longer immune either and will have to adjust. And now traditional out-sourcing countries like India are seeing businesses move to new "out-source" locations. EDS recently opened a new facility in Cordova, Argentina. They re-located a call center for American Airlines from India to Argentina. The move had more to do with time zone differences and the changing demographics in the US than costs. The Argentineans speak Spanish, are educated and work in a similiar time zone as their US customers. So their competitive advantage had little to do with lowering costs. The truth is the global competition is good for us as it forces us out of any complaceny and keeps us motivated to continously reinvest in ourselves by continued learning and innovation. It is a natural extension of geography being a boundary. First we traded with our neighbors, then we traded with other states, now we trade with other countries. And I see it in my own company as we struggle with global competition and it forces us to innovate or die. I've never seen our team work harder and learn more technologies with little daily management intervention than now. New white collare jobs are being created here as well. I recently saw a posting for a Spanish-speaking Brand Manager for Coca-Cola. This job did not exist previously. As a result of out-sourcing my company is hiring full-time German-to-English translators in the US due to our opening an office in Germany and the strong Euro/weak dollar. These jobs used to be located in Europe. So it's much more complex than what is reported.
