Are you proud to be an American?
Michelle Obama has been recently pilloried for stating something to the effect that "for the first time in my life I'm proud to be an American."
I've been thinking about this lately and I would have to say that I definitely feel *privileged* to be an American but not necessarily *proud*.
It seems to me that genuine pride comes from accomplishment so to state that you're *proud* of America is to assert that you actually had something to do with making America what it is. I believe very few of us can make a claim to have made more than an infinitesimal contribution to the whole of America. So if you think America is great then to say you are proud of America is to claim credit for the work of others.
