Sorry but I just gotta get it out! I am sick to death of this no child left behind crap that's been rammed down our throats the last few years. It sounds great on paper but in reality it means 'NO CHILD GETS AHEAD!!!' Whether it's our own kids or our grandkids being affected it's still affecting most of us in some way.
My son will now be spending the next 3 weeks, give or take, preparing for the Texas Standardized Assessment tests. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but ISN'T HE SUPPOSED TO BE IN SCHOOL TO LEARN NEW THINGS????? Why this constant obsession with just teaching these damn tests and taking up valuable school time to teach, over and over and over again, how to take the blasted things??
Because the teachers and the schools are now graded on how well all the kids do on these infernal tests. That's why! All of the attention now has to go to the screw ups because God forbid one of the gangbangers fail the test and flunk the school. The poor teachers are their wits end trying to turn sow's ears into silk purses so they don't get fired and in the meantime the students who really want to learn and could truly excel spend their time twiddling their thumbs while the teacher covers the same dang thing for the 40th time!
I remember they used to handle this by dividing up the classes into slower and faster learners and I understand that they can no longer do that but the good students shouldn't be forced to endure endless boredom and constant test prep because of it. There has to be a middle ground somewhere! Especially when classes are being held back because of non-English speaking students. Give me a break!!!
I'm almost ready to pull him back out of public school because of this crap. I really thought he'd be better off with the variety of opportunities offered in middle school for sports and clubs that his elementary private school didn't have. But, if it means he has to sacrifice his education to have it, thanks but no thanks. I'll take him to soccer on weekends or something for cryin out loud!
Ok, rant over. What do you think??
