April Fools Day!

Does anyone here feel foolish?

I took a math placement test today to determine which math class I can register for--super bonehead, bonehead or beginning algebra. I did ok until they threw in the letters--a, b, x, y---then I was sunk!

So I skip super bonehead and will be in a non-credit bonehead class. Being that I barely made it through algebra and geometry in high school many, MANY years ago, I honestly thought I'd be starting on the bottom.

So I may feel foolish because 12 year old are probably smarter than I am in math but that's ok--I have life experience behind me that they don't so we are even!

That's funny. I'm a FAILURE at math...until they throw in letters. Then it starts making sense. I think the problem revolves around 1; if there is one, how can there be 2; there's no room.

Here's another : 1+2=3 Now what the hell is that supposed to mean? Isnt that like apple plus orange =plum? And what about zero. You can approach zero, but you can never get there (1/2 of 1=1/2; 1/2 of1/2=1/4; 1/2 of 1/4=1/8...and so on. You never get to zero. So how can you discuss zero in terms of mathematics. Zero isnt mathematical; it's conceptual. 1/0 is what? 'undefined'. Once again...what the hell is that supposed to mean? Anything divided by nothing is itself, right? Then they start with statistics...Is it me?
