I just finished a very good book -- Run by Ann Patchett -- and I highly recommend it. It's a good story, but also has some deep stuff to think about in it. One of the most moving passages in the book is about a priest who is near the end of his life, in a nursing home, and while not losing his faith exactly he's doing some deep thinking about his past and his future. Basically what he says is -- what if heaven is really this life? What if I have spent all of my life telling people to do things to get themselves into heaven, what if everything I have done has been to that end, and what if I missed some of the really important and beautiful stuff in life by doing that.
That seems like a very good question to me and it's one that I ponder a lot. And basically what it does is remind me not to take things for granted and to enjoy my life as much as possible, in the now, in this moment, and not to worry too much about what's going to happen when I die. Because really, what if?
