My only infant memory. I could sit up and maybe crawl, but wasn't walking yet. My grandmother needed me out of the way (there was probably the usual parental fight going on), and she took me outside to the back yard and set me on the grass and closed the fence.

The suddeness in the change of surroundings, combined with the coolness and deep green of the grass absolutely terrified me. I could not even consider moving. I sat there, and screamed my bloody lungs out. Grandma came right back, thank goodness, and got me out of that scary grass.

Oddly, to this day I am allergic to grass, trees, pollen, mold, mildew...

I remember being put in my crib, and not wanting to be there. I believed if I screamed loudly enough, my father would come and get me. He was at work. He didn't.

The earliest memory that I have is when a cousin and I killed a cat.

My cousin Topsy and I had been playing in the street outside our grandparent’s house in East Carlton Terrace, Buckie. Facing the granite terraced houses, on the opposite side of the road, was a row of upended railway sleepers which marked the boundary of the steep embankment beyond which there was a railway line. To a small child this “wall” seemed to reach to the heavens.

We had chased the cat up and over the sleepers and as chance would have it, a roaring steam locomotive thundered through the gorge, its long and frequent whistles with the gush of smoke and steam terrifying us both. We thought that the mighty engine was screaming at the cat for getting in its way. We solemnly vowed to each other not to mention this incident lest we got the blame of sending the cat to its gory death.

I remember being in my pram (one of those big - high of the ground things with four large wheels) but I wanted out. I dont recall hitting the ground but I managed to get over the side (this has been told to me also) Could not have been much past 1 if that.

Also remember the 'mangle' in our kitchen. U know - one of those things where you turned a big handle and it had rollers that squeezed water out of your washing. I remeber watching its cogs going round and contemplating putting my thumb between their teeth as my mom was turning the handle. Eventually I did. My mom could not figure out why the handle would not turn anymore so she pushed harder. Eventually, she realized why I was screaming my head off.
