You are making yourself angry by imagining that the clerk's question came from her judging you to be too old or too ugly to be a mother, right? Could her question not be automatic to every buyer? Did she think you looked like a gift shopper rather than a harried mom? There need not have been any insult attached to her question, so why imagine one?

You need to let it pass. I use to be told they thought it was nice that I would bring my grand kids to school. They were mine.

How's this for a bad experience?? My neighbor thought that my partner was my father! Okay, he's really REALLY grey, and I do look younger than I really am, but ... sheesh!

I'm guessing that cashiers, etc... have standard things they have to say to each customer in order to comply with company policy. I don't think it's personal. If they didn't ask each customer then it would be left in the discretion of the clerk. I doubt that's what management wants.

Even if I'm wrong, still don't take it personally. We've all been known to stick a foot in our mouthes a time or two :)

BTW, my daughter worked at ToysRUs, and says they WERE required to ask about a gift receipt on all purchases. So, there's your answer!!

Or... my brother-in-law's favorite (he's a BODY BUILDER) -- "Can I help you out with your groceries?" LOL
