At age 50 after 25 years in industry I found myself unemployed with a decent severance package. My wife suggested I do something that would be fun. I decided to see if I could go to school and get a masters degree in computer science. I called a friend who had some contacts at a nearby university and asked him for a name of someone I could contact. He gave me a name, I called and soon found myself talking to the masters program coordinator to whom I asked: Am I crazy to want to go back to school at age 50. He said no. They had a small number of "older" students and found them to be a benefit to the program so I enrolled.
It was really, really hard and lots and lots of fun. I pretty much did nothing but work on school for two straight years and when I got done they asked me to stay and be a teacher! I'm still here in the best job I can imagine after 8 years. So if you are thinking of going back I would say go for it. Be prepared for a challenging experience and realize that the 18 year olds may be better at some things than you but nothing beats life experience to know how to handle a lot of life's situations.
