I have a small-scale success story for ya'all. In 1985 I was a legal secretary by virtue of going to a typing class at 30 years old at a local community college. Some lawyer needed an entry level secretary and I got in. Oh yes, I dropped out of high school at 16. I returned in 1984 to get a GED and an official high school diploma that year. It was truly easy. My life as a teenager was not. Anyway -- got the job, did the legal secretary thing for 10 years and then I left. I got a divorce. I became homeless. Ho - hum. Then I returned home, back to immediate family. Got another legal secretary job. Hated it. Paid mediocre, I think it was less than $30K. So then I spotted the paralegals. They did interesting work. They did not type all day long. They studied and read and researched the law. They prepared documents based on the things that they learned. This was what I wanted. So I went to school at night and studied and prayed that I would survive the studies and workload. And then, I survived. I became the paralegal that I wanted to be. I make extreme dollars as far I am concerned because I do what I want to do. I love it. No, not every single icky minute of it. Are you crazy? But I do love my work. And when I come home at night, now it has been another 10 years since all of this, I thank all the energies and people that helped me get through the experience. The school, my family, my friends, myself. It is a BLAST to acheive what you want.
