I went back to college at the age of 29. My husband had just left me and I was struggling to bring up two children on my own. Although I had a job, my career prospect was not so bright since I did not have a university education. In my country, so much importance is given to paper qualification and I just had to have it so I could advance in my career and give my children a better life.
It was not so easy combining job, school and single parenthood but I was determined. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I got my first degree and it was so much fun that I went on to obtain a Master's degree.
i thought at 29 I was too old but there much much older people in my class. I remember a 60 year old retired school teacher who took l
literature courses with me. She said being in the midst of young people made her feel young. She walked as if she had springs in her shoes.
Today, I have been able to crack the glass ceiling and the sky is the limit. I will be one of the Generals in my place of work and not a foot soldier. I have my education to thank for that.
On the home front, my children through my experience know how important a college education is. My daughter (24) is in law school and my son (21) is studying dentistry.
I am 44 years old and i am always taking advantage of any training opportunity.
It is tough for women everywhere especially in the developing countries but acquiring college education makes it easier. Its a sure way to beat poverty.
