I fulfilled a life long dream when I graduated from Nursing School 14 yrs ago at the age of 41. Nursing school is an absolutely intense undertaking which necessitates one being very focused on studying nursing theory, procedures & professional practice. There seem to be issues that you are dealing that you need to clear away. You may want to start with going to your advisor and discussing some of these issues with him/her.

If there are study groups taking place you may want to talk with your classmates about joining those groups.

I'm concerned with your statement about a class of nursing students failing and needing tutoring from the Dean of Nursing in order to pass. Something about that is very wrong not to mention strange. Are you attending a credited college?

YOu need to focus on your studies and on nursing. Your focus seems to be on too many other things. Nursing is a wonderful profession and being a male nurse will make you very marketable. Get focused, keep studying, keep focused. You may want to consider transferring to another college - a whole class of failing students doesn't say much for the teaching staff?

I am an engineering student and I often find myself studying from afternoon to afternoon. We are allowed, with special permission, to stay in the building after hours. It is not uncommon for nursing students to utilize the engineering building at night to do their studying.

Sometimes if you host a study group at a home classmates will agree to study together. You could offer an added incentive by catering some snacks. I know it sounds like a bit too much but it is a method that has worked for many of my classmates that do not want to stay at school to study.

Hi. Good for you on this monumental undertaking. I went to nursing school at the age of 28. It was a 2 year program that took me 4 years. I had 4 kids and the baby went with me to the daycare center they had on campus. It was tough. And the classes were unbelievably hard. But I did one thing that I had never done before. I forced my way into groups. When I saw groups of student huddling together studying and sharing notes, I would just kind of bust in the group and make myself a place. I would offer to make copies for the group and would be only my way to the copy machine before anybody could say no. I just realized that I would have to make a place as nobody was inviting me in. I am not a normally pushy person. But this was about my life and I wanted this change, this degree so badly. I have become pretty good at networking now. And I learned to ignore funny looks. It was one of the harder things I had to do but I needed them so I had to step up to the plate and get what I needed. I think on the whole, we all benefited from my forwardness. Other students who were struggling started joining in. By the time we graduated, my class was closer. We even had prayer before exams.

I know what I am saying is hard but honestly, nursing is not easy. The profession is based on teamwork and often, people don't want to be on the team. Somebody has to step up and break down the barriers for all to succeed.

I also teach nursing as adjunct faculy. I am constantly encouraging the students to get together. Who can read 900 pages? It needs to be spit up and everybody take a portion, make notes and share.
