The National Geographic society, through the work of noted international DNA geneticist Spencer Wells (google him,) has untaken a major international project to understand the diaspora of the human condition out of Africa beginning about 60,000 years ago. Information about the project can be found here: https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/
For a nominal fee, one can have their "deep ancestry" assessed based on their Y Chromosome (for males) or their Mitochondrial DNA (for females.) The results will tell you what unique haplogroup you are a member of and where your specific DNA markers likely first appeared, where, and how long ago. Very interesting.
Once done, you are given access to a protected web site that will provide on-going updates about new information of family and genetic lines.
The DNA used for this is not kept, is not reported to anyone, and is not assessed for any medical or ancillary purposes than your DNA origins. Both my wife and I have done this and were amazed at the story our genes can tell....
