What a great discussion topic! When I was a child I had some strange experiences. Now that I am an adult, I question the reliability of those experiences.
I feel I must first explain what growing up was like for me. I have one sister and a brother. I am the oldest. My father was not a kind man. My mother worked two jobs to support us all. We moved a lot. My father was chemically dependent. After breaking his back when I was 5 and being a veteran, he became addicted to pain pills as they were readily available from the VA. At very young ages he would tell us "monster" stories, ghostly stories, and even stories of demons. I believe I was 5 when it started.
In one of the many houses we lived, we would all hear footsteps almost nightly. One time, we were so scared that we screamed, ran to the bedroom door to hold the door shut and "something" tried busting in. As we all screamed louder and louder, our father ran upstairs to see what was going on. We tried telling him that something was trying to get in and he yelled at us and told us to go back to bed. This house was strange. I had dreams of it having secret rooms and a huge dark basement. In my dreams I was very afraid to explore it. It felt evil.
My cousin lived in Otter Lake Michigan in an old farm house. I would go and visit her during the summer months. She had told me her house was haunted. One night I was woke up by her dog growling (the dog slept at the foot of the bed), it was dark and I could barely see anything. However, as my eyes adjusted, I looked over to a corner where I heard a noise. As I stared into the dark, I seen a friendly looking woman who was wearing a blue dress with collar and a bonnet. She was rocking back and forth in an old rocking chair knitting something. My heart sunk into my chest and I elbowed my cousin who was lying next to me to ask her if she was seeing what I was seeing. She woke up and told me she did and that was something she seen a lot. She did not appear to be scared, however, I went to sleep on the couch with the lamp on. Other strange things happened when I was there. The washing machine and dryer were down in the basement. We would hear the dryer turn on in the middle of the night. Other members of the house would tell their ghost stories as well.
As an adult, nothing like the above has happened to me. I have however, felt the presence of spirits shortly after someone I knew had died. Just recently my mom's best friend committed suicide and both my mother and I felt her presence. My mom shared that she felt a brushing against her face and it did not frighten her. It was more a comforting "touch" if touch is the correct word.
I would very much like others to share their experiences. Share your opinions on my experience, was it ghosts? Or over active imagination of a child whose life was full of fear?
