The sudden death of a loved one. The legacy of abuse, physical, sexual, mental, and emotional. The attacks on 9/11. Devastating storms, house fires, traffic accidents. Going to war. Events that rock our worlds and leave us wondering, 'Where am I now? Has the ground shifted beneath my feet? Has the world changed? Will it--or I--ever be the same again?'
The fears caused by traumatic events leave their marks on us. We may become hyper-vigilant, wondering if the same thing will happen again, and make attempts to ward it off. We may find ourselves less ready to open up to life or to other people, or to love. We may be haunted by images of the event in our mind's eye.
There are ways to heal and to grow past these events. And we will be changed, if we seek to heal and to grow. Just as a landscape after an earthquake is radically altered, and yet, still the same.
Let's share stories of how we have seen this work in our lives. Let's offer support for those of us who are still troubled by echoes of things past.
